Pixie February Challenge - The Land of Fairy Tales

"The Land of Fairy Tales"

The Pixie Challenge: Create a project (layout, altered item, card, etc.) using the photo above as inspiration.

Upon receipt of this assignment the very first thing that happened and kept repeating through my head was "Fairy Tales do come true, it can happen to you, when you're young at heart". I could not get that out of my head. Taking that as my lead I decided there was so much I wanted to include and needed to make something larger. What did I use?

8 x 8 matboard covered with three different papers representing the various colors
Flowers for the various greens
Skeleton leaves spritzed with Perfect Pearls Heirloom Gold for the castle colors and riverbanks
Clouds cut from American Crafts paper
Mirrored cardstock curved for the river
Gold-fringed ribbon added to both sides of the river for more dimension and again for the color
Prince, Princess, window frame, Bluebird of Happiness, mouse offering flower, additional mouse and smaller stamped sentiments "Once upon a time ... And they liver happily every after. The End" are all from the There She Goes set "Once Upon a Time"

Punched grass along the river's edge and also built up in front of the castle wall

Perfect Sentiment Challenge - Inspired with Love

Love is shown in so many ways and said in 100's of languages. It has to be the sentiment that is universal. I love you. Something so easy with such an ability to make the person in receipt of this affection feeling fantastic.

This week at Perfect Sentiment the challenge is to create a card with a sentiment that letssomeone know you “love them”. It doesn't have to be Valentine's Day inspired, just love. The twist is to use the photo below as your inspiration for the design of your card. Be sure to let us know what from this photo you drew upon your inspiration. Also, don't forget the sentiment must be on the front of the card.

Look at all there is in the photo below to inspire you:

From the inspiration photo above the first thing that stood out to me were the colors: pink, red, and white. Second, were the flowers at the top, followed by the pink cushions on the chair and the tablecloth. Using that I created the below with the pin, red, and white. The flower in the top corner I made using a 2" Gluber and pink tulle. Instead of using rhinestones to embellish it I used heart brads. The various patterned papers represent the different textures.

Copics used to color the Penny Black image, a pink tulle bow, and a sentiment finish it off.

I chose this sentiment thinking of my husband immediately. We always say we are each other's balance. I have never known anyone to be so patient and keep his cool all the time. His heart is full of love and I have never doubted for a second his love for me. As I write this post it comes to me there are so many that show us love throughout our entire lives. Family seems to be the given, followed by close friends, but then I can think of numerous other influences in one's life that show us love.

Perfect Sentiment - Missing a Button

Welcome to this week's challenge at Perfect Sentiment and to our two new members of the design team. This week's challenge is to create a card with a sentiment of "missing you". The twist is to use a button or buttons on your card. I love buttons and just don't seem to ever have enough, the right size, color, number of holes. I remember my Mom had a button jar she kept in our hallway closet and how much fun it was to always go through it matching, sorting, but never sewing!

Here is my card for the challenge:

Good thing I had just snagged on Splitcoaststampers the Stampin' Up set "Three Little Words" in time for this sentiment. The card is pretty explanatory using the resist embossing technique used before for one of our challenges. Yellow and blue/black are one of my favorite color combinations.

Week of January 29 Entered Challenges

Yesterday, I colored this image with intent to use it for another challenge. However, after reading what I needed for that challenge I decided to go with another image. Instead of throwing this away I decided to search on Kraftin' Kimmie stamps to see if they had a challenge I could use with this image.

Voila! They did! The challenge was to use handmade embellishments -

"be creative and design your own embellishments". What to do, what to do... Here's my card:

My handmade embellishment: the white pipe cleaner flower with ribbon and brad center. Not sure if this is considered an embellishment or not but I also handcut the big cloud in lieu of just a strip of paper or die cut for across the page and then again for the journal box.

Perfect Sentiment Challenge: Circle with Friendship Sentiment

Friendship. Some of us have hundreds of friends and then some have a few. In either case, those friendships are priceless. Perfect Sentiment's challenge this week is to create a card with a sentiment of friendship. The twist? Use the following sketch to inspire the design of your circle card. If you do not have the ability to create a circle card then go with a square card that includes the circles as layers.

My "true friend" card:

I haven't cut a circle for years! Digging out my Creative Memory templates and blades had me back without skipping a beat. The cardstock and design paper came from my stash, same with the flowers, ribbon, bling, and butterfly. The "true friend" sentiment is from a Stampin' Up set - Punch Bunch. The purple butterfly is from Michael's. Ribbon was used for the stems of the flowers and also to "tag" tie the circles together.

When I read the challenge I was in the process, an ongoing process, of clearing some desk space to begin working on design team projects. I had scraps of paper close to the colors (Hot Fudge, Whipped Cream and Berrylicious) sitting right in front of me, along with some punches, brads, and ribbon.

Perfect Sentiment Challenge - Birthday Sentiment with Resist Embossing

Happy Birthday to You. Happy Birthday to You. Happy Birthday, dear... This week the Perfect Sentiment challenge is to create a card with a sentiment for birthdays. The twist is it use the resist embossing technique. If you are not familiar with this technique there are several good tutorials on You Tube and at Splitcoaststampers. It is a very easy and quick technique so something to remember if in need of a card in a jiffy.

2nd Annual Christmas Gift

I forgot to post the 2012 calendar I made for my Mom at Christmas. This was one thing she asked for this past Christmas - a replacement calendar for the one I made her in 2010. I come from a very small family. My Mom is still living, my Dad's sister, my husband, myself, and my daughter. I have a son but he lives out-of-state and sometimes he is home for the holidays and others not. When my Aunt saw the calendar made for my Mom, my son, Ryan, heard her remark how nice it was to have someone love you so much they would take the time to make a "designer" calendar. When Ryan shared that tidbit of information with me, I placed a quick order with Taylored Expressions for a smaller version to make just for her.

Pretty Little Studio Inspirational Challenge #22

I am in LOVE! My money tree needs to speed up its growth as Pretty Little Studio is calling my bank. Do you know about it? If I could I would buy two of everything. And, they do inspirational and sketch challenges. This is my first time playing along. The sketch posted are the scrumptious (I assume) truffles below. Turquoise is one of my favorite colors. Of course, when I saw this photo I was then drawn to participate. First, the inspiration photo:

Going to my stash I had cardstock (white) to reference the table, buttons the truffles; punch for the butterflies; flowers to flowers; bling, and ribbon. I worked hard to come up with just the right consistency for the truffles as you can see below:

Not exactly the same but don't you think they look good just the same? Maybe you should consider whipping up your own truffles! Play along at Pretty Little Studio.

Perfect Sentiment Challenge: Sympathy Inspiration

Happy 2nd week of 2012! I hope you find inspiration to play along with us at Perfect Sentiment. Our challenge is being sponsored by Shelly's Images with the winner receiving one digital image of choice.

This week our challenge is to create a card with a sentiment of sympathy. The twist is to use the photo below as inspiration.

As I looked at the photo a few things stood out to me: icy blue, pure white, and trees. I have tree stamps but the day I planned to start my card, in the mail, I received a RAK, the stamp I used below which I have now been told is over 15 years old. It is a wood-mounted stamp from Era Graphics with a small label on one end that reads "She Who Joy".

Immediately, I knew this stamp would be used to represent the tree. Her arms up the branches. "Joy" also represents my thoughts on death ~ celebrate the life. And, as I so often do, link my inspiration to a music video. The imagery in One Republic's "Good Life" with an upbeat tempo, arms up, and the trees cemented my choice.

It was Friday, December 30, my son was visiting and I was doing a routine email check. My email has the preview option and what I was about to read, reread, and read again left me estatic! Did I read correctly? Me? My son asks what I am so excited about. This is what I read: "Hi Sassy, Congratulations, you have made it to our very first Pixie Challenge...". Of course, this is when you can't get the email to open fast enough! I was selected to become part of the Pixie family - the Pixie Challenge Design Team - that creates monthly one project for the Pixie Challenge. What an honor to be selected one of ten crafters from all over the world!

The first monthly Pixie Challenge of 2012 is "Love Notes" and it runs from now through January 31:

Create a project for Valentine's Day or any other project with heart(s). It could be a card, wall hanging, altered journal - the possibilities are endless with using the word "Valentine" or hearts.

The winner of the Pixie January 2012 Challenge will receive a $15 gift certificate to shop at Pixie Dust Paperie.

Pixie Dust Paperie also offers a monthly kit. January's kit "Love Notes" is a beauty. You need to see all that is included in this kit and at a phenomenal price.

What did I create for the January Challenge?

I started by researching the size of piano keys, scoring my white cardstock at the appropriate distance and the same for the black keys. Originally, I had the piano keys as the entire background but did a bit of slicing and dicing to the size displayed. Using Tim Holtz Distressed Ink - Antique Lace - the piano keys were distressed.

The khaki base paper is from Stampin' Up and the pink polka dot paper from A|Muse Studios. Remaining DSP is from my stash of bits and pieces and I unfortunately am unable to give credit where credit is due. A Gift Tag Envelope template (2.5" x 1.75") was used to make the vellum envelope, cut with scallop scissors and edges inked with a charcoal brown. Hearts and pennant flags chipboard were covered with more stashed paper and made in to the musical notes and the "love note" for the envelope. "A hundred hearts would be too few to carry all my love for you. - Author Unknown, Love, Kiss Me, and B mine are all rub-ons from scrapworks (cr360 - Lucky in Love). To finish it up, a little bling of hearts, ribbon, and a tape gun to press out the "notes and xoxo".

2012 Challenges

I said it last year and I am sticking with it... no goals, no resolutions, only challenges for the upcoming year.

Here are mine for 2012 in no particular order:

1. Maintain one calendar and only one, not six different ones.

2. Stay with one calendar/planner for the entire 2012. Usually when the current one becomes messy, worn, ripped... whatever may be the case ... I am off to purchase a new one.

3. Pay off some debt.

4. Purchase online less scrapping and stamping supplies. Rely more on the Recycle and Big Wish threads on SCS to acquire items I know I like or are new to me.

5. Submit projects for publication.

6. Apply to become a member of another design team. Give my all to the ones I am on currently.

7. Revamp my blog to include labels and better navigation.

8. Become OK with my hair going all gray - ha!

9. Drink more water and lessen the amount of caffeine each day.

10. Be generous. Do more RAK.

11. Stop biting my nails.

12. Make more lists vs. going from one thing to another starting too many things at once.

My Report Card

I decided to report on how I did with the 2011 challenges I listed to keep me busy in 2011. Some happened, some had progress, and others I must have changed my mind on!

1. Organize my recipes and cookbooks ~ I have recipes all over the house in all sorts of baskets and bins, torn from magazines, printed from the computer, cookbooks, recipe cards... you name it I more than likely have a recipe in that form. My challenge is to find them all and locate them all in one area by theme, alphabetically, on recipe cards. I haven't decided yet the form I want them to take but I am thinking along the lines of three-ring binders. +1 - I have gone through all my recipe books, binders, magazines and lose cards and threw out what I have yet to make, know I won't make, and didn't realize I had kept. Plus, Pinterest now keeps me saving a tree and a location for all the online goodies I find and may someday want to try.

2. Reading inspirational and biographies - my favs. My challenge is to read a book each month. +1/2 - Unfortunately, my eyes deteriorated immensely during 2011 and with new glasses in November the prescription still isn't right making reading very difficult. I did, however, acquire several books I hope to someday read.

3. Here's a doozy of a challenge to me - try to break my addiction to the computer perhaps by checking it less often, limiting the evenings I spend on here. I need to make a plan. If I would get off the computer just think of the projects that would be completed. 0 - I failed big time! With sleeping less and less hours as the year went on I found myself online more playing games to occupy the middle of night hours and time just alone while everyone else is at work.

4. I have an Etsy Shop or should I say an Etsy banner and icon BUT it is an empty shop. My challenge is to start building the shop with my items. 0 - I had items listed that I decided to give as gifts. Now, my shop sits empty again.

5. Take more pictures and organize them. They are a lot like recipes. I have photos in numerous websites online along with a huge storage bin to heavy to lift. Get them in books and pick one online site to host them at. +1 I think I made great strides at taking more photos of the items I have made and in the transfer of photos to Picasa.

6. Blog, blog, blog.... I love to blog and I love subscribing to other blogs, and reading them. But the number I presently subscribe to there isn't enough time in the day to read them all. +1 I do blog especially items I make, music I love, and words that inspire. The number of blogs I did subscribe to I "had" brought down to 50-60 from 500, but the number is creeping up. I no longer think I have to read each and every blog on a daily basis. Thank goodness for the option to sort them as time allows and if I don't get to them, oh well.

7. Participate monthly in scrapbooking/stamping online challenges - at least one. +1 Definitely have accomplished

8. Put more thought in authoring a children's book. +1 I know what my character would be, the name, ideas to keep authoring the character, just am unsure of how to get started.

9. My ultimate challenge is to be part of a design team. +1 and +1 Not only one, but two design teams!

10. When I am tired and feeling exhausted, get up and move. 0 Unfortantely, my health took a downward spiral this year leaving me on long-term disability since June. With no improvement yet in sight, unable to drive, and walk without assistance, I am not sure where this will have a part in the future.

11. Continue to build on family relationships. +1

12. My best friend is my husband. I have been told I expect too much from girlfriends and therefore I have no close friendships in that respect. I want a best "girl" friend - one that has your back, is loyal, has same interests, etc. 0 No best girlfriend locally, but my online friends are amazing.

13. Follow this site and watch the videos religiously, weekly... 0 I completely forgot all about this one!

14. Declutter. Declutter the house and the garage. +1 This is an ongoing process that I think is never ending.

The Perfect Sentiment Challenge 12: Thank You w/Sketch

Are you ready to start 2012 with a bang? Or, do you prefer the quiet moments enjoying your craft? If it is the latter what a perfect time to enter this week's challenge at The Perfect Sentiment:

Create a card that reflects a sentiment of "Thank You". Don't forget your card must have a sentiment on the front.
And the twist? Use the below sketch as your inspiration in designing your card. Sketches may be rotated or flipped to make them work for you but we need to be able to see the basic layout of the sketch in your creation.

The winner of this week's challenge receives one digital stamp of choice from Pattie's Creations.

When I looked at the sketch and sentiment to be used it immediately took me back to the days when my children were young (now 30 and 26). People would ask me, "Why do your kids say thank you so many times?" An easy answer for me. They were waiting on an acknowledgment. "Say thank you until you know it has been heard." The younger days made me think of mittens and snowflakes and easels. My card for this week's challenge:

Theme - Marriage Anniversary

Twist: Use the photo to the left as inspiration

Due to the holiday season, this challenge remains open for an additional week, up to 10 PM EST, Tuesday, December 27.

My initial glance at this photo saw only white and flowers. After looking closer much more popped out at me. Originally, I began with embossing the large flower. My plan was to double emboss it to bring out the pink in the flowers but my heat embossing tool went kaput. The large flower represents the bouquet on the table, with a sheer center bloom that matches the trimming at the bottom card to symbolize the various white textures from the sheer curtains to the white flowers to the seat cushions. To represent the metal in the chandelier and the wrought iron-backed chairs I placed metallic-like pearls throughout my card.

Brrrrrr...... it is cold here in Minnesota with a bit of snow and the perfect time to stay inside and work on Christmas cards. Perhaps this week's challenge will spark(le) an idea and get you well on your way. There are so many items on the market that add from a touch of sparkle to all over twinkle.

Holiday Tags

Over the last week I have been making holiday tags using different techniques and a variety of products.

All three were made using manilla shipping tags.

Snowman tag:
Three Tim Holtz Distressed Ink Stains
Sixxiz Snowman (outlined in The Twinery charcoal twine; red felt scarf with Maraschino twine; small red buttons; Stampin' Up cardstock; stick arms frosted with Close To My Heart Glitz Bronze
Additional embellishments included brown and white snowflake ribbon and A|Muse pearls

Pine Sprig tag:
Penny Black Pine Sprig rubber stamp colored with Stampin' Up hunter green and black markers using The Twinery charcoal as the main stem of the sprig and again through the tag hole; sprigs were also lightly frosted with Picket Fence Stickles

Snowflake tag:
Embossed Penny Black Crystal Clear stamp with clear powder; spritzed heavily with Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist in Frost; Stampin' Up felt light blue snowflake at top with button secured using The Twinery cappuccino along with several wraps of same in various directions in the middle of the tag
Additional embellishments included the snowman button, sentiment, and self-stick blue globe ball for center of snowflake.

Perfect Sentiments Challenge 06: All Occasion Inspiration

Time sure does fly by! It is already time for another challenge from The Perfect Sentiment Challenge. The challenge this week ~ create a card that demonstrates an "all occasion" sentiment. Use the sort of sentiment not tied to a personal celebration or holiday. Create to send to anyone at anytime and maybe include a handwritten letter. Do you remember the last time you received something of this sort and how it made you feel? Or, even the last time someone took time out of their day to handwrite you a letter? I love getting mail just for this purpose - the purpose of being thought of not because it is my birthday, a holiday, or due to sickness. Just a greeting.... ahhhh ;)

The twist is to use the below photo as inspiration. What do you see? Pillows? Colors? Chair? Ribbon? So many possibilities... What do you see?

I see three different color combinations and textures and below is my interpretation of this week's challenge:

First closed, then open:

Do you think I can remember the name of this fold? No, I can't. I just did it from memory. Isn't that ironic?

"Enjoy the little things!" is the sentiment I chose to use.
The left side of the card is the pillow in the front with all the ruffles - that says autumn to me.
The right side is the middle pillow with the ribbon accents criss-crossing and circular embellies - the colors are cool, more like winter.
Then the middle diamond is spring to summer ~ the changing of the leaves from the green of spring through summer changes to yellow and orange. Red ribbon was also used as in the third pillow on the chair.
And the main design? Mine.
Coloring used on the design: Tim Holtz Distress Stains - I am in love with these. The little dots on the leaves were made using the Stampin Up Spritzer and their chocolate chip marker. The entire scallop was then coated with Glazon Pixie Dust for a bit of a shine.
The tag sentiment was embossed using A|Muse gold, then Tim Holtz Distress Stain - Marigold, followed by GlazOn Pixie Dust. Using the heat gun then to dry quickly until it bubbled slightly and concentrate on the corner just until the smell of burn causing the brown corner. The little bit of this entire card being the brown right before the snow falls in MinneSnowta!

I have never had the opportunity to live anywhere but Minnesota. Would I miss being here? Yes, as I love all four seasons. Winter use to be my favorite until I had children and the bundling, buckling, snowsuits, hats and mittens. But, when they were just babes they were out in the snow. If I was shoveling the walks and the driveway I would bundled them up, bring outside their little chair on wheels with a tray, stuff them in it, and throw light flakes their way causing them to giggle and do that hard laugh we all love to hear from children. I loved taking our golden retriever, Phoenix, out for a walk, especially the first snowfall, as he would walk the sidewalks with his snout to the walk enjoying the build-up of snow on his face. I love blizzards and more snow than what one knows where to put. But, winter here is about seven months long so there is mucho to squeeze in to be able to enjoy the last three seasons.

Perfect Sentiments Challenge 05: Thanksgiving with Brads/Eyelets

The Perfect Sentiments Challenge this week was to create a Fall/Thanksgiving card. In addition, the twist was to use brads/eyelets.

I had to search high and low to find some brads. There was a time I had so many of them I never thought I would run low. Oh, Santa....

My card all tied up and open:

I finally found some brads and used those throughout, did a bit of embossing of leaves and words, buttons, chipboard and embellies were from my stash, and the pumpkins were stamped and colored with SU markers.

Last night on the news they had a report regarding all the squirrels in a local park. People are being asked not to feed them. These squirrels are not shy one bit as they will follow you hoping for a handout. The news went on to show people feeding them, not from a distance, but where the squirrels come right to your hand, put out their little arms (?) to take the food. They don't then snatch it and run, they wait hoping for more. Evidently, a few peeps have been bitten on the fingers offering them food. Thus, with the now "Don't Feed the Squirrels" I thought they should be thankful for what they have received. If only they knew they should have run and tucked that morsel away for later.

There is no favorite Thanksgiving song this week although I do prefer that Christmas songs begin after Thanksgiving. Instead of a song, my favorite clip from Charlie Brown's Thanksgiving where Charlie Brown, Patti and Linus discuss their plans.

Perfect Sentiment Challenge 04: Season's Greetings Sketch

Here I am again doing The Perfect Sentiment Challenge for the week is to create a card using a sentiment of Season's Greetings. But, those words did not need to be indicated but more a sentiment that expresses one's own personal beliefs regarding the holiday season. In addition, it is a sketch challenge.

I have two (I think it is only two) favorite words. One, I use in a previous challenge (Priceless) and the second is Believe. In my first marriage I had made a cross-stitch of twelve different Santas and was displayed year round. I had read that displaying a Santa showed a heart and spirit of giving throughout the year. I believe in Santa. I do. No doubt. And, in my marriage now we have a sign that says the same. Since religion is not part of my life, gifts to my children have and always will be signed from... Santa Claus and sometimes the Mrs., too.

For my interpretation of the sketch above and my card I chose the sentiment "Believe". The inside of the card reads "in the Magic of the Season". I had thought of using a Santa image but I just couldn't resist the Stampavie ~ Penny Johnson ~ Dearest Deer image. The cardstock is from Stampin' Up and the DSP is from Fancy Pants ~ Saint Nick. Copics were used for coloring. Look at those two little deer looking into each other's eyes "believing" in each other.

And, last it brings a song from the season to mind from ~ The Polar Expess ~ Believe....

Perfect Sentiments Challenge 03: Get Well with Embossing

It's new challenge day at The Perfect Sentiments Challenge blog. This week's challenge: Create a card reflecting the sentiment of "Get Well". There always is a twist and this week's was to use dry or heat embossing.

I am horrible at making up my mind. For example, going out to dinner I like to order last so that I can hear what everyone else is ordering - it might sound better than what I had in mind. For the twist using dry or heat embossing just wasn't going to win the coin toss. I had to use both.

Penny Black is my all time favorite line of stamps. The image and the sentiment are both Penny Black's. I heat embossed the image and the sentiment on the first fold. I used dry and heat embossing on the second fold of the card. The third fold I used A|Muse ruled paper as it reminded me of the tablet in the image and leaving room for a personal message from the sender. A|Muse was the paper of choice. The image was water-colored using Tim Holtz Distress Ink pads. The brads are from Stampin' Up and the ribbon anonymous.

Happy 7th Anniversary

I hope I did the math correctly! We were married on October 17, 2004 but had been together since August 8, 1997. Jason was persistent in getting me to say "yes" as I having already been married for 17 years always thought "been there, done it, don't need to do it again". And, now I can say without a doubt, I am so very happy I did it again.

Oh ... You Got TO Have Friends

In addition, the Divine Miss M - Bette Midler - one of my all-time favorites was an inspiration for this card. Challenges most often I relate to music. The first time I heard this card I remember clearly where I was and what I was doing. It was May, 1974. Our entire floor at college was packing up to head home for the summer and we had this song blasting through the hallway.

Do you have a favorite word? Mine is "priceless". More than likely I use this word most often when commenting on family and friends photos, stories, gifts from the heart, apologies, forgiveness, acceptance, loyalty and on and on. The image ~ Stamping Bella violet Bittybloom ~ with a dance in her step and her arms spread wide open made me think happiness of having good friends and a welcome to have more.

Altered Journal with Matching Clipboard

I am not sure if the person sent this has received it yet or not. But, I have decided to post the pics before I forget about doing so. This was a grant on the Recycle #23 List with a value of $5.00 and under on Splitcoaststampers. If I were selling this the value would have been quite a bit more considering the time and materials that went in to its making. Here it is:

Normally, I would have secured the clipboard on the inside of the back cover with the clip, flower and ribbon just clearing the top of the journal. It didn't fit in the box that way so I left that up to the receiver to decide.

As always I would love feedback be it good, bad or neutral. As long as its constructive ! won't take offense. Promise!

Happy 1st Day of Autumn

To me, this is THE most beautiful time of the year. I love the changing of colors and actually don't mind raking of leaves, leaves, leaves and more leaves.

I will more than likely say the same thing when Winter arrives and the first snowfall as Winter many moons ago was my favorite season. But, I do prefer the cooler seasons.

Also, I know I haven't posted for awhile and I apologize but I have been out of work on short-term disability since the end of June and this coming Monday is the first day of long-term disability. I am basically housebound except for doctor appointments and once a week my sweet husband takes me out for a bit even if just for a car ride. I am though slowly working on projects that are taking more time to complete because of my disability and they are more than creating a card. That is not to say that creating a card isn't time consuming as it can take me a day, sometimes more, to get one the way I like and other times 15 minutes.

That's it for me. I just wanted to give you all a holler and thank each of you that follow me and stick with me even when my health slows me down some.

17 Ways to Use Old Newspaper

What should you do with the newspaper you’ve just read?

Recycle it, of course — but recycling doesn’t always mean tossing it into a bin so it can be reincarnated.

Before you send the funny pages — and every other section — to that big paper pile in the sky, consider using it for something else, like wrapping gifts, washing windows, preventing garden weeds, making origami sculptures, and so much more. (See also: 30 Uses for the Humble Cardboard Box)

1. Cleaning Windows

This seems totally counterintuitive, but a friend of mine recently told me that using newspaper to clean windows works better than a cloth in preventing streaks. Weird, right? Wouldn’t all that newsprint transfer to the glass? It certainly does on my hands. It seems, however, that the newspaper-window-washing Internet population agrees with my friend. For even better results, use a vinegar-and-water solution instead of a chemical cleaner like Windex.

2. Gift Wrap

In a pinch, newspaper works well for wrapping gifts. Most folks generally choose the comics because of the color and humor, but if the gift recipient is in, say, finance, why not use the business or money sections instead? The wrap will seem more thoughtful that way. If you’re super crafty, you can even make a newspaper bow to top it all off.

3. Book Covers

When I was a kid, my parents wouldn’t spring for store-bought book covers when newspaper worked just as well. I probably hated it back then, but now it seems kind of cool. To tell the books apart once they’re covered, use a section of the newspaper that represents each book. For instance, if you’re covering a science textbook, pick the tech section of the paper. Follow these easy instructions to make a newspaper book cover.

4. Disposable Table Cloths

When I’m from (Hello, Baltimore!), it’s a summertime ritual to buy (or catch) a bushel of crabs, steam them up, and dump the red devils on a newspaper-lined patio or porch table. If you’ve ever picked and eaten crabs before, you know how messy they can be (which is why I don’t do it; sorry, Baltimore). The newspaper serves a dual purpose for messy outdoor eating: a) it keeps your table clean, and b) it makes clean up a breeze because all you have to do is fold up the paper starting from the edges and dump it in the trash.

5. Packing Supplies

Bubble wrap and other paper packing supplies are expensive. Honestly, I don’t know why people purchase these things when there are probably plenty of materials lying around their own homes that will suffice in sending the package safely. Newspaper is lighter than bubble wrap too, which will reduce the shipping fees. To pack a box with loose or fragile contents, first wrap the items individually (if they’re breakable, then stuff the open space with crumpled up paper. Just make sure that everything is tight so there’s no opportunity for movement during transit.

6. Weed Blocker

Another tip from a friend that I had never heard of — if you have a garden and weeds are a problem, cover the bed with newspaper and water it to the saturation point. Once that’s done, cover the paper with organic matter, like compost or mulch. Eventually, the newspaper will smother the problematic weeds, and the organic matter will help your garden flourish.

7. Origami Sculptures

Who knew that there were so many ways to fold newspaper into useful things? My search revealed a star bracelet, a hat, boats, baskets, boxes — the list goes on. My favorite, however, was this newspaper pot for seedlings with step-by-step video instructions.

8. Paper Mache

We know what paper mache is, but do your kids? It seems like this craft activity, which uses newspaper, glue, flour, and water, is becoming a dying art. That’s a shame, because it’s so easy and fun! The sky really is the limit with paper mache, too; whatever you can think of, you can make. Like these paper-mache masks. Great for Halloween!

9. Current Event Collages

I made one of these many years ago, and the final product still hangs on the wall in my home. It couldn’t have been simpler. I saved the front pages of my favorite sections of USA Today over the course of a few weeks (you can use whatever newspaper you’d like; I just preferred the colors of USA Today), bought a 4-foot-by-2-foot canvas, arranged and lightly glued the sections on the canvas, then brushed on several coats of Modge Podge. Easy as that. The newsprint didn’t budge — and now I have a perfectly preserved time capsule/art piece to admire for years to come.

10. Picture Frames

Picture frames with pictures make excellent gifts — even more so if the picture frame is a handmade. To create a picture frame out of newspaper, all you’ll need to two sheets of paper (or the front and back pages of the newspaper), scissors, a ruler, tape, clear plastic from packaging, your favorite photo, and these 10-step frame instructions.

11. Fire Starter

By no means is this intended for you to start fires wherever you’d like. That’s called arson — and it’s illegal. If you’re going camping or starting a fire in a fireplace, however, it’s always good to have some newspaper on hand to give the fire an extra boost in case you can’t find kindling or the wood is a little damp.

12. Sell It On eBay

If you have a paper from a notable date in history, i.e. the election of President Obama, etc., put it up for sale. You’ll be surprised how many people collect historical editions of print publications and how much they’ll pay for it. You’ll get the highest bid when you list the paper while there’s still demand for it, but don’t discount its popularity many years down the road. One person’s trash is another person’s treasure. Hasn’t Hoarders taught you anything?

13. Shape Keeper

Ensure that your shoes and bags keep their shape by stuffing them with crumpled newspaper after each use.

14. Pantry Liner

Place newspaper under pantry items like potatoes and onions to keep the moisture — and bugs — away. Newspaper can be used to line other shelves in your pantry as well; if you spill something, just remove the paper and toss it out or recycle it.

15. Gift Basket Stuffing

Newspaper shreds are an excellent alternative to the very non-eco-friendly “grass” with which we line our Easter baskets. The shreds can be used as filling for other baskets as well. For example, if you’re gifting a food-themed basket, fill the bottom with strips from the circulars or cooking section.

16. Ripen Fruits

This wouldn’t work in my house since fruits tend to go bad before we eat them (we’re carb-aholics), but if you want to speed up the ripening process, simply wrap individual pieces in newspaper so you can eat them sooner.

17. Damage Protection

Don’t take any chances when using stain-prone products like paint or shoe polish. Put the paper down before you start your project to protect your goods. You’ll totally hate yourself when you make a mess that could have been prevented.

Angel in Yellow

Recently, I participated in a Summer Color Burst Swap on SCS. A few were flaked on and when the host, Kathleen, was looking for angels I answered her call. I was given the choice to angel black or yellow. Yellow was an easy choice since the person I had to surprise already in this swap was for the color black. The "yellow" participant had not posted a list of her likes and dislikes so I was really taking a wild guess. When I found out who the "yellow" was for I was even happier - Amber - or as known on SCS "fastmommie". She is always a kind and fun soul so I really hoped what I was doing was right. Below is the item I made just for her (sorry about the bad lighting):

The tin was stuffed with yellow goodies. I had just baked chocolate-chip banana bread and included that as bananas are yellow so how fitting!

Today, I received a very nice thank you note from her saying the "package brought tears to my eyes!" She went on to say she "LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the lunchbox" and wasn't too sure she would be sharing the banana bread with her kiddos (I think she has 6!)

What a great way to start the day knowing you made some smiles.

My sleep schedule, or should I say lack of sleep, is crazy. Sleeping only about three hours max at one time I usually am up by 1-2 AM. What do I do during this time? Normally, I work on projects, catch up on emails, read blogs, etc. But last Monday at 2 AM I ran across the TSG119 Challenge.

This time I didn't use Copics but went back and used my SU markers and some chalks with a little Spica added in.

TSG sets are phenomenal. I only wish had been turned on to them much earlier. The last Saturday night of each month is when they host a Release Party for the upcoming month. I now look forward to what their creative minds have in store.

The Sirens Were Blaring...

And I was busy making cards. The photo above shows all and below more details on each.

"We Sparkle" as friends. This is an Inky Antics stamp that shows two friends as angels. It made me think of friends that support each other through thick and thin, always there when needed, even if just for a hug. I used Stampin Up markers for the coloring of the image along with Spicas to add the "sparkle". The bottom white cardstock was spritzed with a SU marker. My Mind's Eye is one of my favorite paper lines and both patterned pieces come from "It's My Party" line. The ribbon, bling, lettering, and button all from my drawers of bits and pieces that someday might come in useful. Unfortunately, the photo doesn't show all the sparkle this card actually has incorporated.

"Just Because" uses white cardstock with inked edges of Baby Blue Versa Color. I have always loved the ripping of paper and so did so with the patterned paper from Fancy Pants and the white for the sentiment. Again both were inked with the same color in Versa Color. The image is Hero Arts Medley embossed with Judi-Kins White Diamond Embossing Powder. From there the flowers were hand-painted with Shimmerz Pearlz blue and Perfect Pearls in Perfect Copper and Perfect Gold. The centers of each flower each with various rhinestones. Ribbon was white to make the flower in the upper-right corner with a Gluber then spritz with Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist - color Pantina with the larger rhinestone added to its center and a matching one in the opposite corner. "Just Because..." sentiment was embossed on white cardstock using ZING! Embossing Powder - color Wake.

What a wonderful concept I ran across while checking out Devonay’s blog! I am sure all of you have done this at some time or another. My regular PIF was usually on Mondays, driving through McDonald’s for my SF Iced Vanilla Coffee, and telling the “voice” at the drive-up that I would also be paying for the person behind me in line. Sometimes it would be a sole driver and other times a family. What a great feeling that hopefully you also started someone else’s day/week off on a positive note. And maybe in return they did something similar for someone else and that person did and on and on and on. I believe this is the first time I have ever shared doing this. Unfortunately, it came to an abrupt halt when my husband was laid off last August.

Why am I telling you this?

Pink Lemonade

I think I have crocheted more baby blankets than anything else. They are quick and make a gift that lasts forever. One summer I made for five babies. The investment made in yarn was costly as I bought 100% alpaca yarn that was oh so very nice. These blankies were so nice that all the people given to were too afraid to use them as they didn’t want to deal with washing them. Really? To say the least I was a bit disappointed and hurt.

Last summer on a trip to a craft store I strolled up and down each aisle as I usually do. This store is huge and I can easily enjoy three hours looking and touching, putting items in and out of the cart, going back to find something that hit me I just had to have ten aisles back – that kind of store. Fabric and I do not get along but I like looking at it and thinking maybe if I tried sewing one more time the sewing machine and I would come to some sort of agreement – the one that I could sew a useful item and be proud of it. So far that hasn’t happened. The bobbin and I don’t like each other.

During this trip I cruised the yarn aisles and came across some for baby I loved. Pink Lemonade. Creamsicles. And a SALE! I find I do the majority of crocheting in the summer. Some think I am crazy as they deem it too hot. Crocheting is a winter activity. Being that we were not at home I decided to make the pattern on the label of these two gorgeous yarns – purchasing both and the hook needed. Badabing… Badaboom… Done! The pattern was fast showing great progress with each row. The creamsicle one I sent to a blogger that I never met, feeling like she never won anything. She was due in just a few short weeks. I sent it immediately wanting to cheer her up. Nothing. Not a word from her. The end of the story for that blankie.

I still have the Pink Lemonade and asked my hubby to take photos of it (I forgot to take a pic of the Creamsicle one)! It was sunny and we have some nice snow. Hence, the Pink Lemonade photographed on a snow bank.

Recently, I participated in a Valentine's Day Secret Sis Swap at Splitcoasters. What fun! One of the requirements was to make your Secret Sis something. Ideas swarmed through my head and then I decided to make a canvas bag or I should say stamp on a canvas bag.

I received the nicest Thank You from my Secret Sis for her goodies I sent specifically chosen for her and her tastes. Her daughter, Savannah, I was told loved this bag and wanted one for herself. It is my pleasure to make one for her, too, in her favorite colors, possibly more ballet related, and to include her beautiful name, Savannah. Love it!

My Real Craft Love

... is crocheting. I learned to crochet when I was 20 years old - 34 years ago. WOW! When I was employed at Mayo Clinic on breaks and lunch we all would sit in the breakroom. The majority of my co-workers at that time crocheted and some played 500. That was where I learned to do both. I started off with the ripple afghans and now they definitely are on my list of what not to do. I usually give what I make and forget to take the photo before I do. I can't even remember the number of baby blankets I have done but over 34 years there have been many babies. Here are my last three projects that I kept which I hope to someday when I get enough inventory list on Etsy:

Washclothes/Dishrags: My Mom loves these as I keep the size about 9 x 9 and the stitches are tight. She hates the loose flimsy ones so for this product I take her direction.

Cowl: For this I used the Lion Brand Jiffy Brand Bulky Yarn in Purple Spray. It measures H 14" x W 48" (96" total) and drapes beautifully.

Afghan: Yarn used was from Mooncake Yarn, Inc. a pure wool-worsted weight titled "Tranquility". The color is "Quiet Water". Size: approximately 48" x 48". Very cozy.

I have several other projects in the works and lots of yarn on hand. I buy yarn like I do patterned paper. Time flies by so fast in the yarn aisles of the store. As I find patterns I look for the yarn and then I put the pattern and yarn together in a sealed bag at home ready to grab when ready to tackle that particular project. When traveling I am never without my yarn bag. Just being a passenger in a car and not working on something is wasted time to me. I like to take advantage of it.

I have lost a week in time. What is really sad to me besides losing it is what did I do with that time! Was it used creatively? positively? lazily? I don't know. That would leave me to think it wasn't the best of times. More than likely it was spent working long hours and being too tired when I finally got home each evening to do much of anything except eat dinner, relax a bit, and head off to bed, hoping to sleep the entire night until that lovely sound of the alarm goes off again at 4:45 AM.

Anywho, I ran across this song/video, and being 54 still does not keep me from liking it. I think of the number of young children, preteens, teens and young adults this is probably so fitting for... Take a listen. It may even pertain to you.

My blog control has gotten way out of hand! I cannot keep up but I want to see and read it all! Yesterday, I checked and I was back to being subscribed to more than 400 blogs. Gotta get this under control! Instead of being an alcoholic, I am a blogaholic! Is there such a word? So, today, I decided to view each and every one. Slooooooooooooow process.... How should I do this?

These are just some of the silly ways I am trying to get my list under control. There are so many fun and interesting and creative blogs out in Blog World.

A Winter Poem

Do you make resolutions? Not me. I make challenges. I say this only because it is a challenge to keep a resolution. A few come to mind for me and these are in no order by any means:

1. Organize my recipes and cookbooks ~ I have recipes all over the house in all sorts of baskets and bins, torn from magazines, printed from the computer, cookbooks, recipe cards... you name it I more than likely have a recipe in that form. My challenge is to find them all and locate them all in one area by theme, alphabetically, on recipe cards. I haven't decided yet the form I want them to take but I am thinking along the lines of three-ring binders.

2. Reading inspirational and biographies - my favs. My challenge is to read a book each month.

3. Here's a doozy of a challenge to me - try to break my addiction to the computer perhaps by checking it less often, limiting the evenings I spend on here. I need to make a plan. If I would get off the computer just think of the projects that would be completed.

4. I have an Etsy Shop or should I say an Etsy banner and icon BUT it is an empty shop. My challenge is to start building the shop with my items.

5. Take more pictures and organize them. They are a lot like recipes. I have photos in numerous websites online along with a huge storage bin to heavy to lift. Get them in books and pic one online site to host them at.

6. Blog, blog, blog.... I love to blog and I love subscribing to other blogs, and reading them. But the number I presently subscribe to there isn't enough time in the day to read them all.

7. Participate monthly in scrapbooking/stamping online challenges - at least one.

8. Put more thought in authoring a children's book.

9. My ultimate challenge is to be part of a design team.

10. When I am tired and feeling exhausted, get up and move.

11. Continue to build on family relationships.

12. My best friend is my husband. I have been told I expect too much from girlfriends and therefore I have no close friendships in that respect. I want a best "girl" friend - one that has your back, is loyal, has same interests, etc.

Each year at Christmas my Mom gets a new calendar. She is a devout Catholic. One year, one of the grandkids gave her a calendar because they thought it had such cut stories for each date. She opened it and it was a Jewish calendar. We laughed and laughed and laughed. She loved that calendar! We could never find another like it but each year we look. So, this year I decided to craft her calendar. They are 6 x 6 slipped into a protector and they hang from a wooden holder I purchased from Taylored Expressions. I painted the wood. She seemed to love it and now I will be challenged to create new pages each year. Being in her 80's it is hard to find something to give her.

Changing the Name of My Blog...

I have always loved "Keep Me In Your Heart Awhile... you may not always like what I do but won't you always love me?" But, for some time, I have been playing with the idea of changing my blog name to "Sassy Moments". I am going to go with that for a bit and see how well it fits.. kind of like a good shoe.

November 19? Really? Where has the time gone? November 29 was the last time I made a post to my blog. Time really got away from me. My Mom always says "you make time for what is important to you". Now, I am by no means saying my blog is not important. In addition, I hope that 2011 has me blogging much more, sharing, and posting photos of projects I complete. Recently purchased were two cameras so hopefully that will help get them now online.

People Never Believed Me...

The summer before last we tried something we saw on the Paula Deen cooking show on Food Network. Use a Krispy Kreme doughnut as a hamburger bun. The KK in our city had closed shop so we bought other glazed, raised doughnuts, cut them in half, grilled burgers, and put our normal fixings on. YUM! Family and Friends thoughts we were crrrrrraaaazzzzzzy for even trying such a thing. The only thing I would advise anyone else brave enough to give this a try... cut the doughnut in half and put the sticky side in.

Now, I am not a fan at all of KFC but it looks like they did the same with a chicken sandwich.

Anyone tried either the burger or the chicken sandwich?

"Just this past weekend, shoppers at the the Macy's in Philadelphia (the old Wanamaker building) were surprised when over 600 choristers who were there mingling with regular shoppers suddenly burst into Handel's Hallelujah Chorus. It's pretty awesome.

The Opera Company of Philadelphia was instrumental in bringing it together to perform one of the Knight Foundation's "1000 Random Acts of Culture" which they'll be doing over the next three years across the country. Accompanied by the Wanamaker Organ - the world's largest pipe organ - the singers burst into song at exactly noon."

I don't know if any of you are a fan of Oprah but I have been forever. It saddens me to think this is her last year. Because I am working when her show airs I do DVR it and this weekend while working on a swap I watched the two episodes about her and Gayle's camping trip. I laughed until I cried. What a hoot the two of them were. Oh how I wish I could have been with them. If you have access to past shows, watch it. It is a non-thinking, just-for-fun, enjoyable two hours... IMHO :)

I am Starting from Scratch!

Do you get carried away with the number of blogs you subscribe to? I was at almost 450 blogs and couldn’t keep up in Google Reader. You can imagine the number of posts I would try to read on a daily basis so as not to get behind. It had become ridiculous! For weeks I have tried to whittle it down and reorganizing them as they were delivered. That was taking more time than to just daily spend the time to weed through all the posts. So, last night I “selected all” and unsubbed from each one. How depressing this morning to check Google Reader to find a blank page. There has to be a better way. How do you decide what to subscribe to via email or Google Friend Connect? I need to find the secret.

And as I think of this I remember all the giveaways entered that don’t email you when you win, you find out by checking their blog posts. I hope my $1,000,000 big win isn’t in one of those posts!

It can only get better and more organized. I hate clutter. There has to be a better way….

I think you're amazing.... this is what I want my daughters to hold out for and never settle for anything else. I always tell them.... don't chase the boys, make the boys chase you. To me, this will show them those that are truly interested in them, as they are, now and in the future.

Beyond the Sunset

My first thought today when I awoke was my Dad. Today would have been his 88th birthday. My Mom is still living and misses him so - gone now for eight years. What a wonderful, loving life they lived... together... needing just the two of them... and being lost with out one another. I will never forget the day of his funeral. My son, Ryan, was giving the eulogy. Ryan talked about being at his other grandfather's funeral and how odd he thought it was that Grandpa and Grandma were not there. As they left the church to head to the cemetary, Ryan looked ahead and saw this older couple holding hands. He thought to himself ... how cute... that is what I want someday... to be so in love with someone that still at the age of this older couple they still held hands. Then, he realized...it was his Grandpa and Grandma.

Happy Birthday, Dad. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of you and remember something from when I was a little girl ("skin the bunny" you use to say as you helped me out of my shirt into my pajamas to the day I was married to my first husband and as we stood ready to make the walk down the aisle you turned to me and said "it still isn't too late to change your mind"). Did you know something I didn't at that time? I wonder. As I am divorced from my first husband but out of that marriage of 17 years came two amazing children. And at the wedding to my second husband Mom shared you always wanted to see me marry Jason. Well, I did, Dad and my life is full and complete and I can't imagine a day without him.

I love you, Dad. Beyond the sunset....

See Terry Fator! Last night, my husband, daughter and I saw Terry live at Mystic Lake Casino. His show is worth every penny and I wasn't ready for it to end. Besides being an America's Got Talent winner he shines as such a good person as the sale of his merchandise 100% goes to military families and the profits from his CD Horses in Heaven goes to St. Jude's Hospital. Here is a very talented guy that I will follow for the years to come. This You Tube video is not from last night but more of an example of his talent.... ENJOY! I did :)

I most certainly didn't know about IBC.

Who has an annual physical that includes a mammogram coming away from it thinking... breast cancer free? IBC isn't detected by a mammogram.

No lumps.
